November 20, 2024
Description:
Veterans and actively serving Reservists and Guardsman are likely a part of every one of our municipality’s workforces. In spite of the ubiquity of service members in our organizations, their unique qualities, experiences, and world view often remain a mystery to leaders, supervisors and coworkers. This course provides a very brief but comprehensive orientation to military service and military life, strengths and struggles for veterans and reserve component employees in our public sector workplace, and best practices for recruiting and hiring them. Topics explored will include:
- The basic structure and nature of the military
- Its similarities and differences from our organizations
- Strengths and challenges of Veterans and Reservists in the workplace - Some best practices and approaches to attract, hire, and retain Veterans and Reservists
Brian Wolhaupter from the City of Middleton will speak from personal experience as a current HR Manager in a municipality, a former US Army Active-Duty soldier and Army National Guardsman, a combat veteran, and as a servicemember that has transitioned from the military to the private/public sector twice.
You will leave this class better able to understand, work with, and support Veterans and Reservists in many ways both large and small.
